Today is exactly three weeks from my flight to Nepal, and I’ll be honest, I’m pretty nervous for a few reasons.
- My fitness level is not where I want it to be. I’ve allowed work to control me more than I should have and when I really could I have gotten in a ride or hopped on the trainer, I decided to continue working. Based on articles and stories I’ve read, it’s hard to be prepared for riding at 3,000 meters no matter who you are.
- The aftermath of the earthquake in Nepal has me skeptical about the infrastructure there. The guide company is adamant about the safety and operational status of the trip, so I have to trust them. Given the US Dept of State issued a travel warning recently, my thoughts have not improved.
- Money. The total investment in this trip is probably close to $20,000. The cost of building the SB5C, the actual trip price, airfare and essential items. The essential items was by far the biggest out of control variable. I didn’t realize how unprepared I was and my wife is super pissed about all the shit I’ve had to purchase.
You know what though, time to STFU and just do it. This is an epic life adventure trip and all of the variables above just make it a better story and will reveal more to me. I am bummed about not seeing Nepal prior to the quake because I know it destroyed a lot of ancient temples and buildings, but I will get to see the triumph of the human spirit, and anguish.
